At WKCR, we don’t need a special occasion to celebrate the music of Miles Davis, but this month of May does happen to mark his centennial, so let’s go all the way. On Monday, May 11, turntablist DJ Logic takes a break from his tour with the Miles Electric Band to join host Mitch Goldman for a Deep Focus on Davis. Logic has chosen a particularly fascinating moment in Miles’s touring career.
In the fall of 1969, Miles had recorded his era-defining album Bitches Brew, but it had not yet come out. The album, when it was released the following spring, wouldn’t sound like anything ever recorded by Miles, or anyone else. For his audience, it would become a Rorschach test. Everyone had to have an opinion about it.
So just try to imagine what audiences experienced when Miles toured Europe that fall. No wait, we have a better idea: let’s listen to rare recordings of that tour from the WKCR archives with DJ Logic and form our own opinions.
Tune in this Monday from 6pm to 9pm NYC time on WKCR 89.9FM, WKCR-HD or wkcr.org.
