Arturo O’Farrill, as a bandleader and as a citizen of the world, is an informed and thoughtful man; it shines through in everything he does. When I asked him for a topic for Deep Focus, his response consisted of two equally surprising options: either Steely Dan or Olivier Messiaen. As of post time, we hadn’t quite decided which of these seemingly wildly divergent directions we would be pursuing. I can’t wait to find out!
