It was great to see Marcia Resnick celebrated tonight for the release of her new book: Punks, Poets and Provocateurs. Wow, looking through that book! It’s hard to believe that we are walking on the bones of that city, and that I lived through some of that. It warmed my soul to see Marcia, joyous and vibrant after all this time. And it’s funny, the things that stay with you and the things that fall away. I don’t know what I thought that was about at the time but watching Marcia work up close and talking with her about her craft, also hours talking with Bob Quine about music, about hearing Coltrane play with Pharoah Saunders and Albert Ayler in SF, his head among the bells, shooting Gil Scot-Heron at the Mayflower Hotel (“It’s all jazz to me, man”), and holy fools, wiseacres and rapscallions of all stripes…. Those were shaping moments for a college dropout who was all throttle and no steering wheel. Those moments endure in my mind and in Marcia’s work..
