Earlier this year, Mitch Goldman and his guest, saxophonist Eric Person, put fellow saxophonist Jackie McLean in Deep Focus. They played and discussed what should always be remembered as a resplendent night in Jackie’s illustrious life: Jackie on a grand stage in his hometown of New York City, surrounded by adoring former students, sidemen, and dear friends. Even the host for the evening was his childhood pal, popular TV newsman Gil Noble. It was a magic night.
But was it an authentic night? Was it what Jackie McLean actually sounded like as a working musician on the road? Was it a working band, with all the familiar language and gestures that develop over time?
How about another Deep Focus on Jackie McLean? This time, let’s hear him in a club with the magnificent trio of Cedar Walton, perhaps Jackie’s most enduring musical partnership.
