In the Jazz world of utterly distinctive individuals, trumpeter Woody Shaw still managed to stand out. He didn’t speak like everybody else, he didn’t move like everybody else (the hours of tai chi (which he would do between sets) might have had something to do with that), he didn’t think like everybody else and he certainly didn’t play like anybody else. When saxophonist Eric Person and I were coming up, his live shows were not to be missed.
Tonight Eric and I put Woody Shaw in Deep Focus from 6pm to 9pm on WKCR 89.9FM and wkcr.org. This is going to be a barnburner!
